smoking2007-07-25-1185364680.jpgIf approved by Governor Eliot Spitzer, New York could be the first state in the country to ban cigarette smoking at drug and alcohol treatment centers.

The proposal would go into effect next year.

In addition to the tobacco ban, treatment centers would be required to help patients quit smoking.

On any given day, about 110,000 people in the state are treated for drug and alcohol dependence.

Medical experts say a majority of them also smoke cigarettes.
