Insuring your boat this summer

Rochester N.Y. - It's finally that time, brush off your decks and polish the sides, boat season is here! Boating for some represents the kick off of summer. But before you kick back there are some things to consider. On average, boat claims increase by 45 percent this time of year, one local insurance agency says that there are precautions to take to avoid such claims. Steve Desino, President of Pinnacle Insurance says with boating accidents on the rise you'll need the right coverage should anything happen."There are a substantial amount of people on the water during the summer in Rochester so boaters should be extra careful," says Desino. "Now is the best time to review your boaters insurance with your agent to be sure you have adequate coverage," he says.

Desino reminds us that your basic homeowner's insurance policy probably doesn't cover your watercrafts. And says that whether or not you're purchasing a boat or updating your policy having the best possible coverage is a necessary step to take in making the most of your boating experience this summer.

He offers the following things to consider when shopping for boaters insurance:

Liability coverage- Your homeowners insurance may provide some personal liability coverage to protect against claims resulting from negligent operation of your boat, but the amount of this coverage is not substantial and is usually limited to very small watercraft.

Agreed value hull coverage vs. replacement cost- An agreed value will cover your boat for an agreed amount while replacement cost will cover your boat in full in the event that something happens to it. It's best to review with your agent which option is best for you.

Pollution Coverage- if pollutants are suddenly and accidentally discharged in to the water from your boat and you are legally required to clean it up. This type of removal could cost thousands without insurance.

Towing Coverage- A broken down watercraft could cost hundreds of dollars to tow inland. Having insurance on your watercraft will remove your boat from the water without costing you a fee.

"Although boaters insurance is not required by law in New York State it is strongly suggested that you purchase it," says Desino. "Keeping your boat insured will allow you to make repairs or replace your boat should anything ever happen to it," he says.
