Breathe A Little Easier: Battling Bad Breath
- Your Bad Breath Could be Temporary or Chronic -
“There are a number of factors that can contribute to either condition,” says Dr. Glen Spinelli of the Spinelli Dental Group. “Food particles in your mouth, bacteria, medicine, dry mouth, smoking, alcohol, and illness are all contributors to bad breath.”
Hundreds of millions of dollars are spent each year on mouthwash alone. Billions of dollars are spent annually on gum and mints. Mouthwash, gum and mints are good solutions for temporary bad breath.
“If you are going to use a mouthwash for bad breath, use one that is alcohol-free,” says Dr. Spinelli. “Read the labels, most mouthwashes contain alcohol, which can actually perpetuate bad breath.”
Dr. Spinelli adds that there things you can do to help combat bad breath, including:
· Practice regular dental hygiene
· Scrape your tongue
· Drink plenty of water:
· Chewing gum (sugarless)
· Change your diet
“If your morning breath does not go away after brushing your teeth, then you could have chronic bad breath,” says Dr. Spinelli. “If that’s the case you want to go see your dentist to get help with the condition.”
