Safeguard Your Spring Break
On average Americans will take over 2 million personal trips a year. That's 2 million unattended homes, apartments and personal belongings. Nationally a burglary happens every 13 seconds. The frequency generally increases during peak travel months, including Spring Break. One local insurance company says there are things you can do to ensure your belongings are safe while you're away.
Steve Desino of Pinnacle Insurance says when spring comes around, many will be taking that long-awaited vacations to "get away from it all." Unfortunately, some vacationers will return home to find "it all" is no longer there.
"Vacations should be a time spent having fun and relaxing," says Desino. "Keeping your home properly maintained while your away can help reduce the risk of loss and help ensure the safety and well being of friends and family," he says.
Desino says homeowners; condo and renters insurance policy may cover loss or damage of your personal items while traveling, up to specified limits. Take time before you go on vacation to compile a personal property inventory, which helps determine replacement costs of lost items. He recommends documenting each item and it's year of purchase and its original price. Items that may exceed policy limits, such as jewelry, cameras and golf equipment, these things need additional protection.
Desino advises you to have a review of your home and auto coverage done before you travel. For instance, request the full contract so you will know everything that the policy covers, this way you will be able to read the fine print.
"It's better to be safe than sorry." Says Desino. "A small additional purchase can save you thousands of dollars should anything happen while you're away," he says. "Insurance is your safety net should the unexpected rise." "A few minutes is all it takes to make sure you are properly protected," adds Desino.
