David Winfrees eighth inning double was the key hit in a five-run rally, leading the Rochester Red Wings to an 8-4 win over the Syracuse Chiefs Sunday afternoon at Frontier Field. Luke Hughes had two hits and two RBIs, and three Rochester relievers combined for four innings of one-hit scoreless baseball to keep the team close. Reid Santos made his first start as a Red Wings after spending last season in Double-A Akron and Triple-A Buffalo in the Cleveland organization. It was also the first start for Santos since July 25, 2007. Syracuse starter Marco Estrada, appeared in just his thirteenth International League game in his career. Santos worked his way through five innings, leaving the game with the Red Wings behind 4-2. The Wings led early. Alejandro Machado led the third inning off with a single. Jeff Christy walked to put runners on first and second. With a 0-1 count, Matt Tolbert hit a two-out single to left field to score Machado and give Rochester a 1-0 lead. Alex Cintron, who led the league in hits entering the game, led off the fourth inning with a hard hit ground ball off Tolberts glove at second for a single. Brad Eldred followed with a a single. With two outs and runners in scoring position, Justin Maxwell delivered for Syracuse with a three-run home run off the centerfield batters eye. . After the Chiefs added a fifth inning run on a sacrifice fly, Matt Macri led off the bottom of the fifth with a double and advanced to third on Estradas wild pitch. Tolbert walked to create runners on first and third with one out. Gary Glover relieved Estrada, but immediately gave up a double to Hughes, scoring both Macri and Tolbert to make the score 4-3. In the bottom of the eighth, Tolbert led off the inning drilling a double to left-center. Hughes followed with another hard hit ball to the same spot, putting runners on first and third with no outs. Righty Garrett Mock replaced Glover on the mound but for the second time in the game the Syracuse bullpen gave up an immediate double, this time to Winfree. The hit scored Tolbert from second and tied the game 4-4. Mock intentionally walked Dustin Martin to load the bases, but followed with unintentional walks of Trevor Plouffe and Machado, allowing Hughes and Winfree to stroll across the plate. Macris sacrifice fly scored Martin, and pinch-hitter Brock Peterson RBI hit finished the scoring. Jose Mijares got the win with one perfect relief inning, and Tim Lahey picked up his second save. Ben Julianels two scoreless innings between Santos and Mijares were a key factor in keeping the Wings in the game.
