Lou Saban Passes Away

By: Thad Brown
Updated: March 29, 2009
Ex-Buffalo Bills head coach Lou Saban passed away early Sunday morning at his home in North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. He was 87. Saban had been battling heart problems for years and recently was hospitalized after taking a fall. It was Saban who coached the Bills to their only championships, winning the AFL in 1964 and 1965. Saban left after that second championship and fourth season in Buffalo, but returned to the team for five more years beginning in 1972. However, Saban quit midway through the 1976 season and then meandered his way around the coaching ranks, taking multiple jobs at various levels of football until his retirement in 2002. Saban also even ran the New York Yankees under George Steinbrenner. The Yankee owner called Saban a "friend and mentor for 50 years." Sabans departure from the Bills in 1976 was a rocky one. He and Buffalo owner Ralph Wilson never saw eye to eye the rest of their lives and Saban was never elected the Bills Wall of Fame. Its an honor he now can only receive posthumously.
