Bills May Have Blown Trade

By: Thad Brown
Updated: February 28, 2009
According to the Washington Post, the Bills missed a chance to get something in return for guard Derrick Dockery when the team missed an NFL paperwork deadline. Reportedly, Buffalo and Detroit had a deal in place sending Dockery to the Lions for unknown compensation, but did not file paperwork on the trade with the NFL Management Council by a 4pm Thursday deadline. The result was a choice between paying Dockery 4.5 million dollars or releasing him, and Buffalo chose the latter. The mistake also cost the Lions Dockery. Detroit offered to pick up the remaining five years of the contract Dockery signed in Buffalo with 2009 and 2010 guaranteed, but the Redskins swooped in and offered a slightly richer deal to steal Dockery away. Buffalo did make another free agent signing Saturday, inking offensive lineman Geoff Hangartner. The four year veteran played in every game for the Panthers last season, starting eight at guard and center. Hes likely to play center--his preferred position--in Buffalo.
