The top fit toys for kids this year are all about the family.
Sean Stark, an exercise physiologist at Unity Hospital says the top of his list is anything that has to do with sports."What I'd like to do is talk to the parents about possibly finding tools or perhaps games they used to appreciate as children and maybe have that reintroduced into their life. We want to incorporate motor skills, we want to encourage free thought.," Stark said.
This includes, balls and bats, rollerblades and bikes, anything that gets kids moving...
If you're looking at a bike, Stark says keep this in mind: "Try to contain the child's excitment because as you can see with the weather out there, it's not the best time to get out there. It's certainly a great time to introduce it, create that excitement so that they're ready in the spring." If you have a grandchild, niece or nephew that's really into a particular sport but you don't exactly know what kind of equiptment they need? Don't worry, Stark said, "Another good gift this year is a gift certificate for a maybe a sporting lesson or fun activity center in your area."
Classic board games are also on the list from "twister" which works the body to other classics which work the mind.
"It will help their motor skills, it will help the young children think through the colors, identification, thinks like that--it's a great tool," said Stark.
Finally...A game which didn't rank so high last year...Is getting rave reviews this year...The nintendo wii--why? More active games to choose from.
"The wii games have come a long way. The 'wii fit' is ok, I'd like to see them incorporate a little more basic instruction but the base tools are there."
