The debate over gun control heated up on the steps of Rochester City Hall Wednesday.

There are passionate voices on both sides of the issue surrounding gun control laws. Supporters of the New York SAFE Act hope the law will reduce the type of gun violence that took the lives of 20 school children at Sandy Hook Elementary in December.

"We think it's a good first step in making our streets safer and in curbing the gun violence that's really out of control in our urban cities," supporter Dana Alas said.

The rally was held by those in favor of the act. But gun proponents turned out as well. They are fighting for the SAFE Act to be repealed.

"I feel it's unconstitutional. I don't like the way it was done overnight. There was no input from the public and I feel that it's really the wrong thing to do. I don't see where it's going to save any lives. I don't see where it's going to reduce the crime rate," gun supporter Mike Steadman said.

Governor Cuomo signed the SAFE Act into law in January. He is now in talks with legislators to possibly make some changes to the act, including the limit on magazines.
