Pope Francis was installed Tuesday in what Vatican officials say was a traditional, but simple ceremony. Various heads of state, royalty and religious leaders were among the guests at the two-hour ceremony. Pope Francis will be given the formal symbols of papal power: a personalized gold-plated ring and a strip of cloth known as the palium.
"The palium is like a woolen scarf made from lamb's wool and it recalls the fact that Jesus is the good shepherd who goes and seeks the lost sheep," Vatican press secretary Thomas Rosica said.
More than a half dozen Latin American presidents are attending to honor the first pope in their region's history.
