Last month we told you the superintendent of Rochester schools visited homes of tardy students to get them back in the classroom. Now Superintendent Bolgen Vargas is teaming up with Rochester's mayor to congratulate kids with high attendance.

Vargas and Mayor Tom Richards hand-delivered certificates to students with excellent attendance at their homes. Almost 10,000 students in the district have gone to school every day or almost every day so far this school year.

"Later on I know I'm going to need the stuff I learn in school later in my life," fifth grader Joshua Wright said.

"I want them to have all the opportunities they can get I don't want them to end up in the street with nothing to look forward to," parent Krystie Lanyer said.

" It's important to recognize the children who are doing well and the families behind our students," Dr. Vargas said.

Over 3,000 students have achieved perfect attendance while over 6,000 have excellent attendance. Excellent attendance means they have been at school more than 97 percent of the time.
