After months of work, cleanup at Kershaw Beach in Canandaigua is coming to an end. The beach had to close early last summer after a black goo-like substance was discovered.

The opening of the beach will serve as an unofficial kickoff to summer.

"I look forward to bringing my kids down there come Memorial Day," lake watershed manager Kevin Olvany said.

It is good news for beach-goers who had a short summer last year thanks to black tar balls found on the beach. Canandaigua Lake Watershed manager Kevin Olvany says 5,000 tons of material was removed, though they found not all of it was contaminated.

"Based on the chemistry professors' research was that it was a crane case oil or lubricating oil dating back to the 1920s for vintage vehicles like Model-Ts based on the chemical analysis," Olvany said.

Olvany says the project that began last October was a great success and partnership between state and local government. A new beach that is safer than ever.

Other than the few finishing touches, the beach is good to go once the State Department of Health signs off on the project.
