Two U of R professors have created an app, that let's you see the world around you in a whole new way.   Leila Nadir and Cary Peppermint created an app, that combines nature and technology.  They are two things that don't always go hand in hand.

"We so often hear that our screens pull us away from the world around us. We are looking at these little screens instead of looking at trees and buildings. So we wanted to see if there was an app that could make us look around," says Nadir.  So they came up with "Indeterminate Hikes".  It's available on the Iphone and Android. All you have to do is put in your starting point and destination.

"It creates a meandering non-linear path so you end up going places you didn't expect," says Nadir.  Peppermint adds, "there are randomized points that pop up and give you instructions of things to do and ways to engage your immediate environment."

Nadir and Peppermint also lead group hikes with the app.  "We often will show up and act as hiking guides similar to the way if you had a nature hike, you'd have a nature guide with you."

They've done hikes in Rochester, Syracuse and New York City.  "There's ecological issues at play everywhere," says Nadir.   And everywhere there's a new path to explore....  "they are taking a path they normally wouldn't go down. They are seeing buildings they have never noticed before. Parts of the city or landscapes usually ignore," adds Peppermint.
