As the April 15 income tax filing deadline nears, CPA Tom Walpole shared some filing reminders Monday morning on News 8 at Sunrise.

Walpole said people who have gotten married, divorced or changed their name for personal reasons need to let the Internal Revenue Service know about the change or their return may not be accepted. He said you should the Social Security Administration so they can revise their record. The IRS matches names and social security numbers from tax returns with those in the SSA database to avoid fraud and curb identity theft.

People who need their previous years' return and cannot find it can get help from the IRS as well.  Tax return transcripts and tax account transcripts can be obtained free of charge for the past three filing years.  Actual copies of a return can also be obtained going back six years, but a $57 fee is assessed for each return.

Walpole also suggested people who have changed banks recently, such as those who coverted from HSBC to First Niagara, make sure the IRS has the proper account information on file for any refunds.
