Emergency medical records will now be accessible by other health care providers -- thanks to the Rochester Regional Health Information Organization.

Often times those who call 9-1-1 are treated at the scene or refuse ambulance transport, and now -- the health information will be available on an electronic pre-hospital care document. Ambulances do this by entering information into a laptop.

RHIO tested this new system with two ambulance agencies and it' has spread to 18 agencies total -- including Rural Metro and Monroe Ambulance.

"More patient information both in an emergency department and primary care setting so they know more about the patients care, there's a reduction in subsequent hospitalizations and they don't necessarily have to admit them to a hospital because they know what's going on," said Ted Kremer, Executive Director, Rochester RHIO

RHIO says this new system will be extended through its 13-county service area over some time.
