Pittsford, NY--In their first week alone, students at Thornell Road Elementary have raised more than $1,100 in their "Pennies for Patients" initiative.

"I was not expecting to raise that in one week," said student council advisor, Danielle deManincor. "So, the fact that we have made that already is pretty impressive and shows what a caring community we have."

The fundraising concept is simple.

"We put small buckets in each classroom, and than people bring in coins and some people even bring in dollar bills," explained Brooke Rossow.

At the end of each week, they collect the cash and tally the total.

100 percent of the proceeds are going to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

deManincor says they choose the cause after learning that many in the Thornell Road Elementary community had been touched by cancer.

That's why they say every last penny counts.

"It's nice to help people that are in need and are sick," added student council vice president, Ally Rohrer.

"It just makes me feel good to donate the money knowing it's going to a good cause," said treasurer, Tommy Birmingham.

Students will be collecting money through March 8th. If you'd like to donate, you can send a check to Danielle deManincor's attention at Thornell Road Elementary School,431 Thornell Rd, Pittsford, NY 14534.
