The article featuring SUNY Brockport freshman Alexandra Kogut's violent death on campus in September is touching the hearts of her classmates and readers nationwide.

Kogut was beaten to death in her dorm room with a curling iron on September 28th. Her boyfriend, Clayton Whittemore, 21, is charged with her murder. Students we talked to hope this article can help other young women.

"I think it might give others the courage to speak up because I can't imagine anyone wanting that  happening to them.  And they want to stay safe.  Keep their families safe, their friends safe.  And I just think the overall reaction from others is it's going to teach them to speak up," junior Alyssa Hosein said.

"Teen dating violence is a little different than adult domestic violence in that abuse can be perpetrated in both directions. When the male is perpetrating the abuse though, because generally when we're teenagers  and young adults, there is a substantial difference in size and strength,  the results are more often serious, when the male is perpetrating physical violence," SafeJourney Executive Director Ali O'Malley said.

Whittemore is scheduled to appear in court next week. If convicted, he faces up to 25 years to life in prison.
