Many are in the process of deciding whether to prepare their own return or hire an accountant or tax professional to do it for them. H & R Block estimates about 40 percent of Americans use online software to do it themselves. Others find peace of mind entrusting a tax expert to prepare their return.
"You want to make sure that whoever is going to do the return knows the tax law and knows that it changes every year," CPA Tom Walpole said. "I try not to be a historian and just report stuff that happened before, but I try to be a guide and help them in the future."
The Internal Revenue Service says anyone earning less than $57,000 can consider using a free file program on its website. You can find that information here.
