Rochester Company Beats Google to Smart Glasses Market

Google is rushing to complete what it calls Google Glass - a wearable version of your smart-phone display.

But a Rochester company has a similar product that is getting prepared for production.

"You can put the eye piece low in your vision, up in your vision, wherever you would like it to be," explained Paul Travers.

Paul Travers is the CEO with a vision.

Vuzix, a Rochester company, got major accolades at this year's Consumer Electronics Show.

"It's always been about wearable display technologies for Vuzix for me. The whole idea of giving people a display that they don't have to pick up and carry,"said Travers, who wore the company's latest product for News 8.

"This top portion of the screen is what you see when you look inside this device," explained Travers.

The company will beat Google to the market with the first internet-enable smart glasses.

"I have no idea the path that they are on versus the path that we are on other than it will give consumer's lots of options," said Travers.

Once you put on these smart glasses it's like holding your cell phone about arm's length away from you.

What you see through the display are applications that can pull up Facebook, Twitter, or maps.

"So right now I am just watching this little video clip and it shows some of the things the device can do," said Travers.

The glasses come complete with an HD camera, GPS, wifi, and blue-tooth capabilities.

It's about connecting the real world with the data-driven world.

"As you are walking down the street it has overlayed information to tell you where you are going :06 so if the ATM is in the corner you might see an arrow 500 feet when you look through the glasses in that direction," said Travers.

Travers has many visions for how smart-glasses could change how we work and play.

While Vuzix has offices all over the world, it makes its products right here.

"I like the idea of building stuff in Rochester, NY quite frankly. There are highly skilled people here and they do a great job," said Travers.

These smart-glasses will be ready by mid-summer for around $500 dollars.

But Vuzix is already looking another year ahead to a sunglass version of these smart glasses.

"It has to become a fashion statement before people will adopt it that way," said Travers.

Travers says this is the future - right in front of you.
