Just last week, the CDC announced a new strain of the virus that causes stomach pain, diarrhea and vomiting. U of R is testing a vaccine that is injected into the arm. Previous studies have used a nasal spray.
"What was seen before with the nasal spray vaccine, was that it did protect, but it didn't protect everyone, this intramuscular form is much more immunigenic. and so my expectation will be that it will work for norovirus as well," Dr. John Treanor said.
If it is approved, this will be the world's first vaccine against the norovirus.
