Firefighters are fighting a blaze at a home in Irondequoit where several people were trapped inside.

Calls came in for the report of a fire at a home on Tamarack Drive, just off of Culver Road around 1:45 p.m.  The Point Pleasant Fire Chief says one man was inside the home at the time of the fire. Neighbors called in the fire and tried to rescue the man, but were unsuccessful. Fire crews arrived and were able to rescue the man. He was taken to the hospital. The chief says his condition is critical because he inhaled a lot of smoke.

About 50 firefighters responded to the blaze. The fire is now under control. The chief says the house is a total loss.
