Senator Chuck Schumer is calling on some stores to stop selling assault riffles, at least temporarily. Schumer made the plea Sunday in Washington.

Schumer says sales of these weapons have already skyrocketed since the massacre at a Connecticut Elementary School that left 20 children dead almost a month ago.

"I'm urging our country's gun retailers, like Wal-Mart and Sports Authority, to suspend sales of modern assault-style weapons until Congress is able to fully consider and vote on legislation to curb gun violence," he says.

Schumer fears sales could climb even higher during an upcoming "gun appreciation day" organized by pro-gun activist.
