U.S. National Team star and Pittsford native Abby Wambach was named FIFA Women's World Player of the Year.

Wambach is the first American to win the award since Mia Hamm in 2002. She edged out teammate Alex Morgan and Brazil's five-time winner Marta in the voting. Both Morgan and Marta used to play for the western New York Flash. Wambach led the national team to its fourth Olympic gold medal in the 2012 summer Olympics in London.
