Monroe County Democratic Party Chairman Joe Morelle has nominated his son, Joe Morelle Jr., to fill a vacancy in the county legislature. That vacancy was left by Democrat Ted O'Brien, who was recently elected to the State Senate. But Republicans say the idea suggests nepotism within the Democratic party.
"It's just very striking and very telling that he would make this an opportunity to give a good Christmas gift to his son by appointing him to the Monroe County Legislature," majority leader Anthony Daniele said.
Chairman Morelle says he has always encouraged his son, but the voters have the final say.
"If I said to my children they should be involved in public life in some way because I think it's important as long as it doesn't inconvenience...at the end of the day the people in Irondequoit are going to make the decision," he said.
The nomination still has to be approved by the county legislature president. If it is, Morelle Jr. will run on the ballot in November to the finish the year left in the term.
