The man accused of brutally beating his girlfriend to death inside her Brockport dorm room is claiming extreme emotional distress.

Clayton Whittemore, 21, pleaded not guilty to murder at his arraignment in October.

The Monroe County District Attorney's Office says Whittemore's attorneys have filed a notice of "Extreme Emotional Disturbance," basically what's known as an insanity defense.

Police say Whittemore brutally beat 18-year-old Alex Kogut to death inside her SUNY Brockport dorm room in late September.
