They couldn't hold on.
Jordan Evert tied the game on a short touchdown run in the final minute and Micheal McCoy caught the game winning TD in overtime as Sweet Home stunned Eastridge 28-21 in the Class A State Quarterfinal Friday night at All-High Stadium in Buffalo.
The Lancers were ahead 21-14 with 2:30 left to go and the ball at the Sweet Home 16 yard-line. However, facing 4th and 8, the Lancers tried a fake field goal and were stopped. A minute later, the ball was at the Eastridge 16 yard line. Evert finally punched it in with 50 seconds remaining.
On the first possession of overtime, a penalty and two incomplete passes left Sweet Home with 4th and goal from the Lancers' 19. Somehow, McCoy was left wide open at the goal line and Michael Torrillo found him for an easy touchdown.
Eastridge moved the ball to the Sweet Home 13, but Alec Mortillaro's fourth down pass to the front right corner of the end zone was incomplete.
Jeremiah Ortiz rushed for 124 yards and a touchdown to lead Eastridge. His TD catch early in the second half gave the Lancers a 21-7 lead. Evert scored all three regulation touchdowns for Sweet Home.
