We begin another school year of Golden Apple Awards. The first stop for our surprise patrol is at Rochester's Monroe High School to sneak up on Science Teacher Andrea Tutino.

Andrea has taught Science in the Rochester School District for 13 years. Administrator Pina Buonomo says when a kid leaves her class they don't leave her life. "She always goes above and beyond her call as a teacher to make sure her students are successful."

Andrea visits students at home, gives them rides and school supplies and stays connected with them. Senior Janie Williams asked us to say thank you to Miss Tutino for never giving up on her. "She's a great teacher. She's dedicated to her job. She's there for students always."

So why would a High School Senior still remember a science teacher from eighth grade? "She's still there for me" says Janie.

We walked in on Andrea in the middle of class. Her students screamed! I asked her what it means to her that Janie would write us and say please come and say thank you to my favorite teacher? "It's amazing. It's probably the best thing that's ever happened to me in terms of like teaching. I don't really get shaken up or embarrassed or like I don't know. I'm usually like good on my feet with words and stuff so this is like a huge surprise, so thank you."

Andrea Tutino is a News 8 Golden Apple Award winner. you can read the letter Janie wrote nominating her below.

Dear News 8,

This teacher deserves this more than anything! She sacrifices for any student that needs her help day in and day out. I've never met anymore more dedicated and who loves their job like Ms. Tutino. She has been so supportive of me over these 3 years I've been going to Monroe. She's like the mother I never had. I wouldn't be the person I am if it wasn't for the love, help, and support she has given me in school and in life. She really deserves this more than anyone and anything! Please :)

Sincerely,

Janie Williams

Monroe High School Senior
