There is a new program for fans of dance, step and double dutch in Rochester.

It is available at eight city locations, and it's so popular, the city is looking at ways to expand it. This team of 6 to 10-year-old girls call themselves the Avenue D dancers. They are learning all the right moves, thanks to the R.E.C. at the Rec program. Through recreation, exercise and choreography at eight city recreation centers, they're having fun and staying in shape at the same time.

Jessica Burns described why she likes the program. "I get to play around and have fun as well as being healthy," she said.

"It's been good we have a great turnout," said coach Toshman Powell. "The kids in this community, they really need it they don't have a lot going on in this area so we look forward to coming in here and doing it."

The Greater Rochester Health Foundation is funding the program with a $175,000 grant as part of their "5-2-1-0 Healthy Hero" campaign.

Damian Brown from the city of Rochester added "it's a free program, it's offered at a multitude of locations. So, it gives them the opportunity to engage and do things that otherwise they wouldn't."

This cycle ends in mid-September, but the program will continue through March of 2013. For more on the R.E.C. on the Rec Program, click here.
