Daisuke Matsuzaka wasn't overpowering, but he was very good in a rehab start at Frontier Field Monday night.

Matsuzaka allowed four hits and a walk in two and a third innings, but struck out three and got a key double play to keep the Empire State Yankees off the scoreboard. The game was played in Rochester, NY because the field in Scranton--where the Yanks normally play--is undergoing renovations all summer.

After allowing a bunt single to the first hitter he faced, Matsuzaka induced a 3-6-3 double play to clear the bases. It turned out to be important because the next Yankees each lined solid singles, but Dice-K got a strikeout to escape the jam.

In the second, Matsuzaka struck out the leadoff hitter and retired the second on a groundout before surrendering the walk. A short pop to center ended the frame.

The Japanese hurler faced two Yanks in the 3rd, resulting in a strikeout and broken bat single, before leaving the game. Matsuzaka threw 47 pitches with 30 for strikes. The outing was expected to be short.

Matsuzaka is rehabbing a right upper trapezius injury.
