Penn State's President Rodney Erickson says the stature will be stored in a secure location. Since the child rape scandal involving former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky, the statue has been surrounded by controversy. Most recently, Paterno's statue came under fire after the release of the Freeh Report, an investigation into the sex scandal led by former FBI Director Louis Freeh. The investigation revealed several Penn State officials concealed evidence in the scandal and that Paterno could have prevented more sex abuse had he taken action.
For now Erickson says that the university's library which also bears Paterno's name will remain.
