Rochester's 2012 results were the lowest of New York's big five school districts. For ELA, scores dipped from 24 percent to 21 percent. In Math, only 27 percent of students passed the state exam. Vargas says city students can learn with more time in the classroom and better support. He said this fall more emphasis will be put on the new common core curriculum and improve achievement.
Superintendent Vargas says he has the support of the Rochester Teachers Association and school principals to make the necessary changes to increase the test results.
