ELA/Math Test Results For City Students Released

By: WROC-TV
Updated: July 17, 2012
Superintendent Bolgen Vargas said he was not surprised by the decline in Rochester's English Language Arts and Math results in grades 3-8 because the test has gotten harder, and teaching methods have yet to adapt.

Rochester's 2012 results were the lowest of New York's big five school districts. For ELA, scores dipped from 24 percent to 21 percent. In Math, only 27 percent of students passed the state exam. Vargas says city students can learn with more time in the classroom and better support. He said this fall more emphasis will be put on the new common core curriculum and improve achievement.

Superintendent Vargas says he has the support of the Rochester Teachers Association and school principals to make the necessary changes to increase the test results.
