Overshadowed by the offensive explosion was Wilson (7.0 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 6 SO) who dominated on the mound, holding the Red Wings to just four hits while striking out six over seven shutout innings to earn the victory and improve to 5-4 on the season. The outing by Wilson was his longest since he tossed 7.1 frames as part of the Indians no-hitter on April 29 in Durham.
However, the story of the night was the Tribe offense, which exploded for a season-high 16 runs on 17 hits, including six-run rallies in both the second and seventh innings. The Indians spread the wealth on Sunday night as 12 different Indians batters scored at least one run, 11 collected at least one hit and eight drove in at least one run.The Tribe offense gave Wilson all the support he would need early on with six scores in the bottom of the second. DH Jake Fox began the rally with a base hit to center and, after moving to second on a passed ball, came plateward for the game's first score when 2B Yamaico Navarro connected on a ground-rule double to left-center.
RF Brandon Boggs was then hit by a pitch before 1B Jeff Larish singled home Navarro to extend the Indians advantage to 2-0. C Tony Sanchez then came to plate and collected his first career Triple-A RBI when he lined a base hit to left to plate Boggs.
Larish would cross the plate later in the frame when d'Arnaud reached on a fielding error before CF Starling Marte capped the six-run rally with a two-run triple to center. The three-bagger for Marte was his International League-leading eighth of the season and scored both Sanchez and d'Arnaud to give the Tribe a 6-0 lead.
The Indians were not finished, however, as they tacked on single scores in the third and fifth and two in the sixth to further their advantage to 10-0.
After Navarro came around to score on a double play in the third, Boggs would bring home Marte with a base hit in the bottom of the fifth to push the Indians lead to 8-0. The Hernandez duo then got into the act when 3B Anderson Hernandez led off the sixth with a triple to right field and came around to score when LF Gorkys Hernandez singled to left later in the frame.
Marte would then double to left to move Gorkys Hernandez to third where he would later score on a sacrifice fly by Navarro. However, the offensive outburst for the Tribe still would not end in the sixth as they plated six more scores in the bottom of the seventh
The seventh inning breakout began with walks to Larish and Anderson Hernandez and an infield base hit by pinch hitter Brian Friday that loaded the bases. Pinch hitter Eric Fryer then drove home Larish with a base hit to right before fellow pinch hitter Jose Morales cleared the bases with a three-run double to left.
Navarro and Boggs would finish off the Tribe's second six-run frame of the game when they launched back-to-back two-out doubles to extend the Indians advantage to an amazing 16-0.
Every Rochester hurler surrendered at least one run with starter Matt Maloney (2.0 IP, 5 H, 6 R, 4 ER, 0 BB, 0 SO) suffering the loss to fall to 0-2 on the season. Tribe reliever Evan Meek (2.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 B, 1 SO) finished out the shutout for the Tribe with two hitless frames of work.
The Tribe and Red Wings will now wrap up their four-game series on Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. Indianapolis expects to send RHP Rick VandenHurk (3-0, 1.46) to the mound while Rochester is expected to counter with RHP Samuel Deduno (0-1, 3.94).
