Andy Pettitte allowed the first four runners he faced to reach base and it didn't get all that much better from there.

Pettitte gave up five runs, but only three earned, on eight hits and two walks. He struck out five and picked off a runner in five innings of work at Frontier Field Sunday.

The Scranton Yankee defense let him down right off the bat when first baseman Steve Pearce could not track down a pop-up just into foul territory from the game's first batter. That hitter, Pedro Ciriaco, promptly doubled and the PawSox had two runs on the board before Pettitte retired anyone.

After a visit to the mound, Pettitte seemed to calm down a bit, striking out two and picking off Lars Anderson easily at first to end the opening inning.

In the second, Pettitte ran into more trouble. Pawtucket loaded the bases with one out on an error, an infield single and a walk. Pettitte then walked Jose Iglesias on four pitches to force in a third Pawtucket run, but avoided more trouble with an around the horn double play to end the inning.

Lars Anderson opened the third with a ringing double for the Sox, but Pettitte got the next three in order for his first scoreless inning. Pawtucket got to him again in the 4th.

After a leadoff single, Tony Thomas doubled into the left field corner to score a fourth run. Thomas moved to third on the throw home and scored on a Ciriaco sac fly. Pettitte then retired the next four hitters in a row to end his day after 92 pitches, 59 for strikes.

This was expected to be Pettitte's only start at Triple-A before his likely return to the majors.
