A healthy lifestyle is important for every family.
That's why we are celebrating Rochester's healthy heroes; local families that strive for a well-balanced life.
Every family has a routine. It may not be as rigid as others, but parents go to work, kids go to school and scheduling is necessary.
Single dad Steven Turner and his 10-year-old daughter, Jordyn, have a plan that helps them achieve a healthy lifestyle.
"You just got to play with your kid. You got to play with your kid and negotiate with them. You have to find that thing that you like to do, that they will do with you, but then you have to find that thing that they like to do, and you have to go and do that with them as well," said Steven Turner.
For example, Jordyn likes to ice skate and Steven likes to golf, so the pair participates in both activities. In recent years, golf has become one of their favorite things to do.
"One time it was my last swing and I swung it 100 yards for the first time," said Jordyn Turner.
Steven says not only do they enjoy the bonding experience, but it allows them to maintain a healthy routine.
"We are walking so you get the good cardiovascular. Golf is a sport where you engage your core, so you get that result, she doesn't recognize that now. Also, you get the sense of balance. You get the sense of focus," said Steven Turner.
Golf is part of what Steven calls daddy-daughter day. Every other Saturday they set aside time to spend together.
"That's when we get out and we'll go play golf, we'll go do putt-putt, we'll go ride go-carts, we will go to places like Adventure Landing, we'll go roller skating, do a little bit of shopping, because she's a girl, I got to go buy her something," said Steven Turner.
"It's a lot of fun. Especially since he is here with me. It's the best," said Jordyn Turner.
When it comes to eating, this family also keeps a balanced routine. Steven says they eat well six days a week. Then, there is junk food day where they eat whatever they want.
