"Chefs On the Move" Comes to Fairport

Fairport High School students are now part of a national program that aims to help kids eat healthier.

It is called "Chefs On The Move." A team of chefs and students hope to change the way the school's students see food. Art Rogers is a chef and owner of Rochester's "Lento," a restaurant that focuses on local and sustainable food. Fairport senior Chris Cullen approached Rogers several months ago with a proposition.

"When I was in high school I had no awareness of sustainable food, and the fact that Chris knows about it and the kids are aware of it is definitely encouraging," Rogers said. Cullen thought Rogers would be an excellent candidate for the "Chefs Move to Schools" program. It is part of the national "Let's Move" initiative. Family and Consumer Science teacher Kelly Lang was eager to get the school involved with the program.

"I think it's very important in this day and age to know where food comes from," Lang said. Rogers has volunteered at the school for several months. He has given talks to students about local and sustainable food, and developed a way to bring the concept to the student's lunch trays.

"Kids have actually enjoyed the lunches," Rogers said. "I've actually gotten a lot of compliments from different people."

Word of the success has spread and several other chefs have reached out to Lang to be part of Fairport's program. For more information on the chef program, visit their website.
