It was no surprise that Athena and Brockport would have another close contest. The two teams split their regular season matchups, and in the playoffs both teams held leads in the second half. Semaj Howard scored 14 points for Athena, but it was his final bucket with 3.1 seconds remaining that made the difference for the Trojans.
Athena held a two point lead and the ball with just under a minute in the game. Brockport's Brinson Blocker stole an in-bounds pass and finished with a layup, tying the game at 56 with 35 seconds left. After Athena took the lead, Markell Collins tried a shot from halfcourt at the buzzer, but could only hit the backboard.
Collins (26 points) and Blocker (19 points) combined to score nearly all of Brockport's scoring. Athena had four scorers with more than nine points: Deion Hamilton (19), Semaj Howard (14), Jay Sarkis (14), Alex Spitale (9).
Athena will play Victor in the Class AA2 semifinals on February 28th at Gates-Chili High School.
