Employees: Kodak To Lay Off Workers in Entertainment Imaging

News 8 has learned that Kodak is preparing to cut jobs in the Entertainment Imaging division.

That's the division responsible for making motion picture film.

Several sources within that division say layoffs are coming.

We were told that meetings were held this morning about reductions starting march 1st.

However, we do not know how many jobs this might mean.

Much of the film is produced right here in Rochester.

It goes to movie studios and filmmakers.

And then there is the film that is used to make copies of motion pictures - which theaters get.

Local experts say its an area that is still profitable for Kodak, but competition from companies like Fuji is creeping in with news of bankruptcy.

"Our view is if Eastman Kodak's senior management were to really get out in front and talk about their product and talk about how strong their company is... assure their customer base that they can make the product and deliver the product, they would have a better time of keeping those customers," said George Conboy, Brighton Securities.

Meanwhile, Kodak wouldn't confirm these specific layoffs, but do say they continue to make staffing adjustments in light of their recent bankruptcy:

"As for entertainment film, we have been making adjustments in that business for several years as volumes go down. Most of the volume reductions are in print (theater projection) films - as theaters continue to convert to digital projectors. With regard to origination film, you will find it of interest that of the nine nominees for the Best Picture Oscar, seven were shot on Kodak film. Kodak film continues to be a big part of movie production," said Chris Veronda, Kodak spokesperson in a statement.

Kodak's spokesperson says if Kodak makes major changes to a business it will make an announcement, but so far no new major business changes have taken place.
