Some sixth graders at the Allendale Columbia School are using i-pads to teach others how to go green. It's a 28 minute documentary that carries an important message. "Allendale Columbia and the three R's", is a journey through the school's efforts to go green. "We wanted to show how we were involved and it turned into a humungous project that the kids just embraced and ran with. It was amazing," says teacher Tina Duver.
About 26 sixth grade students used their i-pads to make this video. It is part of a contest for Western New York Recycles and they won first place. "The kids actually went out as investigative reporters and interviewed everyone they could find," says Duver.
Victoria Ann Marino and Jaden Sowell both worked on the project. "It was a lot of fun, I loved pretending I was a reporter asking people questions. I like that a lot," says Victoria.
She interviewed the maintenance staff and got a behind the scenes tour.
"They showed us where they kept the lightbulbs and stuff that needs to be shipped out and stuff so that they could be recycled," she adds.
Jaden talked to some of the younger students to make sure they knew how to go green. "I worked with the kindergartners and I asked them how they recycled. They had ideas but when I walked in and asked them, they were already recycling paper and doing a little project, so what a coincidence," he says.
Many of the students working on the project were surprised to learn how many different ways the school is helping the environment. "Just the sheer recycling we do in the kitchen. All of the milk containers are recycling all the food we collect and compost. The kids work hard on a daily basis and it becomes part of them," says teacher Tina Duver.
