Trader Joe's is opening its first Upstate New York store in Pittsford.

The grocery chain is set open inside Pittsford Plaza in 2012 with a 14,000 square feet space.

Trader Joe's currently has more than 350 stores nationwide, but the majority are located in Southern California.

The unique grocer specializes in exotic food finds, imports, and organic goods.

The Wilmorite Management Group owns Pittsford Plaza and says it has been working to get the grocery chain in the Rochester area after Trader Joe's started doing research on the region.

Construction is set to begin in January 2012.

Some of the current stores in the plaza are being relocated to make room for the grocery chain.

The plaza's owners say they are not fearful of competition with Wegmans, which is next-door.

Instead, they say that it is a complement and is only about 10-percent the size of the Wegmans store.

Wegmans says it is committed to doing what it does best, provide customer service and easy, health meals.

Trader Joe's is expected to open during the summer of 2012.

I fell in love with Trader Joes almost 7 years ago while on a trip out west and while I am a loyal Wegmans customer trader joes can offer me more of a natural selection so for me TJs will compliment Wegmans nicely.

Finally a Trader Joes in CNY! TJs has its own following and is quite a different atmosphere compared to Wegmans. I along with many friends will be making regular road trips to Rochester from the Syracuse area. Thank you Trader Joes!

I was talking to a cashier in Albuquerque, NM about opening a Trader Joe's in Rochester. She replied, "Why would we do that? It's too cold up there!" I bet she is kicking herself now!

Trader Joe's has some great and refreshing new products. I have shopped them in MA while visiting my brother. He always bring me products from there when he visits. Wegmans is just too big to be greatly affected by Trader Joes, but I'm positive will see some sales go away when they arrive. Looking forward to Trader Joes!

Thank God! Wegmans has been gouging us enough already! The games they pay with reducing package size, replacing with their brands while raising prices is getting old. Trader Joe's is a GREAT store! I am so happy I have a better option than Wegmans!
