Wings Wash Tides Away Early

By: Thad Brown
Updated: August 7, 2011
The script was flipped on the Norfolk Tides Sunday night at Harbor Park. The Tides dropped the series finale with the Rochester Red Wings 8-0 in front of 3,834 fans.

Mitch Atkins (2-5, 5.20) was roughed up for his second straight outing. The Norfolk right-hander lasted just 1.2 innings and was in trouble from the start. The Red Wings batted around the order in each of the first two innings, plating eight runs on six hits in that time.

Mike Hollimon got it started for the visitors with a one-out triple. After a hit batter, Justin Morneau gave Rochester the lead with a single, and Dustin Martin followed with a three-run homer that sailed over the Tides bullpen in right field.

It didn't get better for Atkins in the second inning. Once again it was Morneau taking part in the damage. The former American League MVP delivered a bases-clearing double after Atkins walked the bases loaded to open the frame. Chase Lambin added an RBI single off the freshly-inserted Mark Hendrickson to plate Morneau later in the inning.

In all, Atkins was charged with eight runs on five hits in 1.2 innings, his shortest outing of the season. He also walked five batters.

The bullpen shut the door on the Rochester offense after the 2nd inning, using four pitchers to toss a combined 7.1 scoreless innings, but the Tides offense couldn't figure out Andy Baldwin.

Baldwin (6-9, 5.45) gave up just four hits in 7.0 innings. He walked a batter and struck out one.

Ryan Adams ran his hitting streak to 13 games with a 2-4 performance that included two doubles. He is hitting .356 (21-for-59) during the stretch.

Matt Angle also added two more hits and is now hitting a blistering .375 (42-for-112) since June 30.

The shutout was the Tides first at Harbor Park since falling 1-0 to Durham on August 21, 2010.
