At Monroe Community Hospital, there's a special volunteer who sees the best of everyone.  For seven years, Sister Judy Whalen has reached out to the patients in ways both big and small.  Whether she offers a simple hello, discussion groups or spiritual advisement, this Catholic nun makes daily rounds every bit as important as a doctor's or nurse's.

"Sister Judy is a very passionate woman," says Barbara Fortunato, Director of Volunteer Services at MCH.  "She's very giving and she always puts others before herself."  Marilyn Veet is an MCH resident who counts on Sister Judy's visits.  Over time, the two have become good friends.  "She does a lot with getting us out of our pity parties and seeing that that's not where it's at," she says.  "Our relationship with God is real."

Sister Judy spent 36 years in education and 13 years doing parish work.

When that was over, she felt drawn to be a volunteer.  Something led her to MCH, which provides long-term care to hundreds of people.  "What I do is not only serve but be with the residents," says Sister Judy.  "They are not patients, they are residents that are here, forever.  I respect them and love each one of them."  It's a relationship that works:  a Golden Giver who puts the community, in Monroe Community Hospital.
