Two Bombs Enough To Down Wings On Fourth

The Rochester Red Wings dropped a 6-3 decision to the Pawtucket Red Sox on the Fourth of July, before a standing room crowd of 12,729 - the 10th largest crowd for baseball in Frontier Field history. Trevor Plouffe had two hits and drove in a run for the Red Wings.

Kyle Weiland struck out 12 in eight innings of one-hit ball against the Red Wings on June 29, and continued his brilliance against the Wings Monday. He pitched six and two-thirds innings, allowing just two runs over six hits and no walks, while striking out six.

The Paw Sox jumped out to an early lead in the first inning. Rochester starter Eric Hacker walked the first two Pawtucket batters. Clean-up hitter Lars Anderson then hit a home run, giving the Paw Sox a 3-0 lead before the Red Wings even had the chance to bat.

The Red Wings got a run back in the bottom of the third. Toby Gardenhire led off with a single. Danny Lehmann and Brandon Roberts then hit into consecutive fielders choices that advanced Gardenhire to third. Plouffe then knocked him in on a single.

But the one run wouldn't be nearly enough as the Sox got another three-run home run from James Kang in the top of the fourth inning. At that point, the Sox scored all of their six runs on just three hits, as Hacker walked five batters, three of whom scored.

The Wings got their second run in the bottom of the seventh. Aaron Bates reached on a single. Pawtucket starter Weiland then came out of the game and was relieved by Jason Rice. He immediately gave up a single to Chase Lambin, putting Bates on third. A wild pitch by Rice then allowed Bates to score.

The Wings picked up a run in the bottom of the ninth, when Gardenhire grounded into a force play.
