Students at Rochester's School #58 have gotten used to trying new things.
These students owe at least some of their curiosity for healthy food to their teacher, and Healthy Hero award winner, Amy Shema. During her lunch bunch program, Shema brings fruits, vegetables and healthy meals for a small group of children to taste.
Kids are amazing they are so willing to try everything, I just ask that they try it. If they don't like, that's okay. I just ask that they try and they usually do," said Shema.
She and some 3rd graders took her prize money, and put it back into this Fruiteria, part of the school's annual burrito sale. The children researched 4 tropical fruits, to find out where they come from and what they need to grow. They then made fruit kabobs to encourage the whole school to be healthy.
Parents of Shema's students say they're coming home and asking for more healthy snacks, and that's changing the eating habits of entire families.
