Victor Wang consistently wows judges with his flute. His latest accomplishment? Last month, he participated in the National High School Honors Orchestra, in California. It was made up of the best student musicians from around the country.
"With an orchestra, you get such a full sound, and so when I went to the National High School Honors Orchestra, all the players were really top level. They all knew what they were doing, they were all just as passionate about music - it was really fun," said Victor.
Victor is the principle flute in three different ensembles at Webster Thomas High School. Three years ago, he started the flute choir at Webster Thomas. Now, for his senior project, he's composing a piece especially for it.
"It definitely helps you get inside of composers heads when you play other people's songs. You sort of start to think, 'what were they thinking when they composed that?'"
Teacher and band director Steven Landgren says Victor excels at everything he takes on.
"What he's learned through music, hard work, listening, evaluating what he's doing, working on something until it's perfect, he'll carry through his entire life," said Landgren.
"I'm going to Yale undecided, so I could be doing any number of things in 5 years, but basically I see myself playing in some sort of community orchestra or something along those lines."
Those who know him say Victor's a great musician, a great student, and an all around great kid. This phenomenal flutist sets high standards, and it shows.
