"You want to make sure you do everything to take care of the baby the best you can. So you have a healthy baby when it comes to delivery,"
Alicia Johnson is 33 weeks along with her second child. She says she thinks healthy habits start while the baby is still in the womb. She's noticed her first child eats what she did during pregnancy.
"I'm a big fruit eater so I've noticed it with him - he's a huge fruit eater," said Alicia.
"It's probably one of the most important things you can do is making sure you eat healthy," said Dr. Waldemar Klimek from Penfield OB/GYN. He said there is no evidence showing what moms eat during pregnancy changes the chances of a child becoming overweight later on, but he says improper nutrition could lead to problems at birth.
"Decreased growth of the baby. The bones may not be as strong, nerve development and so forth," said Dr. Klimek.
He recommends moms-to-be maintain a balance from all food groups, gain no more than about 30 pounds during pregnancy; and take in enough vitamins and calcium, as suggested by their doctors.
Alicia is due in May. She says her diet is on the right track, and because it is, she believes her baby will have a healthier start.
"Yes, I'm a believer," she said laughing.
