You've probably heard of the website, kidsoutandabout.com. It's a local website with all kinds of activities for kids.
Debra Ross came up with the idea after her own children were born.
"I realized I was seeing a lot of things that were available for kids here in Rochester, but kind of after the fact," says Ross. The site allows groups to put their activities on a calendar. Then parents can see what's coming up. Ross adds, "there's just so much out there, that's offered in our area for active kids both in the winter time and in the summer time." "It's the right way to help your kids get culturally literate and physically healthy by exploring their environment. So that's part of the whole healthy hero aspect get out and exercise your body and your mind," says Ross. And that means staying active, even in the winter. "Our indoor recreation page, as you can imagine, is our hottest page right now listing all the great indoor recreation centers and community centers that hold stuff."
Ross was awarded a healthy hero grant. She in turn, gave the money to "a magical journey through stages." It's a not for profit theater group that keeps kids moving. Ross says, "what they'll be doing is offering scholarships to their summer camps with this grant from the greater rochester health foundation."
