The Red Wings only managed two hits, both off the bat of Brian Buscher, as they were beat by the Syracuse Chiefs 2-0 on Saturday at Frontier Field. For much of the game, the starting pitchers were locked in a duel. Wings starter Kevin Mulvey (1-1) exited after tossing five innings and allowing one run on four hits. He struck out six batters. Syracuse starter Bill Murphy (1-1) stayed in for six innings and did not allow any runs. To finish off his outing, Murphy sat down 10 straight Red Wings, starting in the the third inning and extending to the sixth when reliever Ryan Gosling came in. The first run of the game didnt come until the fourth inning when Chiefs shortstop Hector Luna got on base with a single. He stole second and scored when third baseman Sergio Santos lined a ball into left. The Chiefs scored another run in the eighth when, with two outs and catcher Curtis Thigpen on second after a double, Syracuse manager Doug Davis pulled designated hitter Matt Watson and put in Robinzon Diaz. Before pinch-hitting, Diaz was 13-for-25 against the Red Wings. After the pinch-hit at-bat, he was 14-for-26 as he scorched a single to centerfield to score Thigpen. The run put the Chiefs up, 2-0. The Red Wings almost started a rally in the bottom of the ninth off reliever Shawn Camp. Buscher earned his second hit of the game and Garrett Jones reached on a Santos error. After Randy Ruiz struck out, Matt Macri hit into a game ending double play. Julio DePaula pitched two scoreless innings after Mulvey exited . He pitched two innings without allowing a hit.
