saspittsford2008-04-11-1207925352.jpgSpend enough time with Pittsford Sutherland senior Doug Templeton, and you realize he is one cool artist---as cool as the crisp, clean lines he commits to canvas. He's prolific too. "My concentration for AP Studio Art was portaits," he says, "so I have about 12 portraits here that I've done this year. I also did some still lifes. I drew a watch and some other still objects." Doug favors realistic pencil and charcoal drawing. He's been at it for 10 years, and his teachers say this year, he's gone from being just a student, to a full-fledged artist. "I just saw him blossom," says Kathleen Cramer, Standards Leader for Art in the Pittsford School Distrct. "I watched a student who came in and worked not only in class but lived in this room after school and was challenging himself on his own, and this year, I just saw that dedication in him that is making him as excellent as he is." Doug has the unique abiility to capture something beautiful in the ordinary. It's the kind of art that makes you look twice. He's studied at RIT, Nazareth College and SUNY Brockport. His work has been on display at the Rochester Airport, and won acclaim at the regional and national Scholastic Art Awards. One day, Doug hopes to teach. It's a natural fit, since both his parents are teachers. Next year, he's off to art school. It's a cool life, for an artist who makes still life look easy.
