You know a teacher is special when we get a News 8 Golden Apple nomination from his boss. Tonight we surprise Fairport High School English Teacher John Baynes.

Mr. Baynes has been inspiring students for 34 years. He says he tries to make them think. "We don't take the time to really sit back and look at the meaning of things. I think kids are hungry for meaning. They want to be challenged, they want to think deeply about their lives."

As President of the Fairport Educators Association John Baynes created a program called "Friends of Fairport" to raise money for important causes in the community. Principal Chris Salinas nominated Mr. Baynes and calls him a quiet hero. "He never needs any type of pat on the back and he just does it cause it's the right thing to do."

But when we got to the classroom door for the surprise there was a problem. It was locked. Mr. Baynes had to let us in!  He is so highly regarded Fairport School Superintendent Jon Hunter helped with our surprise. He told John "The quality of the work you do for these guys and for all of us should be recognized and this is best way to do it. Congratulations."

Mr. Baynes says it's important for teachers to lead by example. "We teach who we are. And I, by the way, am a flawed human being trying to be better. So I think when we give and we care we teach giving and caring."

John Baynes is a News 8 Golden Apple Award Winner. You can read the letter Mr. Salinas wrote nominating him below.

Dear Channel 8,

He's not your typical association president. As an educator who has given over thirty years of his life guiding, leading, and inspiring students, John Baynes is a teacher who continues to pour his passion into helping all students succeed in mastering the English language.
An English teacher by trade, Mr. Baynes uses his classroom as a stage for manufacturing original thought, eloquence, and dialogue amongst all of his students, never failing to challenge any of them. I enjoy my regular visits to his classroom, because he treats every day as an opportunity to provide students with an education that will last beyond their high school years, and well into their adult lives.
Beyond this, John is a quiet hero, who regularly organizes and triumphs causes to help others in need, never seeking any limelight or recognition for his acts. Rather, he simply partakes in random acts of kinds because of his genuine care for the well-being of his colleagues, students, and friends at Fairport High School.
Please accept my nomination for John as the Golden Apple of the Month Award recipient, as he truly embodies all that the award intends to spotlight.

Sincerely,

Chris Salinas
Principal, Fairport High School
