(Albany, NY) -- It's time to get back to the business of the state of New York.

That's what New York Lieutenant Governor David Paterson told a press conference in Albany today, ahead of his swearing-in as governor on Monday.

Just one day after Governor Eliot Spitzer's resignation amid a prostitution scandal, Paterson said it has been, quote, "a sad few days in the history of New York." He emphasized his commitment to providing the state with stability and continuity at a difficult time, adding he wants to build a positive relationship with New York's legislators.

Paterson said he and the lawmakers are already busy hammering out a state budget that's due April 1st. New York's budget process is especially tough this year given that the state faces a four-point-four-billion-dollar deficit.

Paterson will become New York's first black governor and the nation's first legally blind chief executive. A former state Senate Democratic leader, he spent more than 20 years in the legislature before becoming Spitzer's lieutenant governor in 2006.

While Spitzer had a combative relationship with the state's Senate Republicans, Paterson has been praised for being able to work with lawmakers on both sides of the aisle.
